About Dr. Abutaleb Saremi
The Father of IVF in Iran and the Founder of Sarem Hospital
Education Abroad
Dr. Abutaleb Saremi was born in 1947 in Darreh Gaz, Razavi Khorasan Province. He completed his primary education in his hometown and his secondary education at Anvari High School in Darreh Gaz, then at Shahreza High School in Mashhad - near his grandfather who resided in Mashhad. After obtaining his diploma in 1964 and being accepted into the national university's medical program that same year, he participated in the entrance exam again the following year to study at the state university and was accepted into Tehran University's medical program. Due to the circumstances of the time, he studied for a while at Jundishapur University in Ahvaz and after two years continued his studies at Tehran University, where he successfully earned his doctorate degree. Then, he accepted the invitation of his fellow townspeople and for one year until his military service, provided valuable services to his fellow townspeople at the Red Lion and Sun (Red Crescent) center in Darreh Gaz. There, an incident sparked his motivation to continue his studies in gynecology or, more accurately, 'maternal health.' However, continuing his education was contingent upon completing his military service, during which he served as a duty officer at the 6th Fighter Base Hospital in Bushehr and was also the head of the Bushehr Province Road Health Department for a while.

However, it wasn't long before he resolutely sought to continue his education. For this reason, he began his specialized training in gynecology and obstetrics at Tajrish Hospital and then, after receiving acceptance from prestigious European universities, initially went to Spain. Simultaneously, the opportunity to study in Austria became available, and with relentless effort, he successfully obtained specialized diplomas in gynecology and obstetrics from the University of Vienna, Austria in 1980 and from the University of Münster, Germany in 1982. After receiving his diploma, he began his specialized work in Germany as an assistant professor. In the continuation of his activities, he successfully obtained a subspecialty degree in infertility treatment and IVF methods from the University of Vienna in 1986.
Return to Iran
Although obtaining a specialized diploma, assistant professorship, and specialized work at the highest level in Germany was considered a great success in his life, he accepted the invitation of the Iranian delegation that had gone to Europe at that time to attract specialized and committed personnel, and returned to Iran on December 8, 1982, serving for one month at Shahid Hospital in Tehran. Then, regarding the establishment of the IVF laboratory embryo research center, which was a nascent science in the world at that time, negotiations were held with Tehran University, and after obtaining the necessary approvals, the research center was established on March 17, 1984, and early 1985 through his efforts at Shariati Hospital and officially began its activities. Dr. Saremi, at the beginning of the establishment of the IVF laboratory embryo research center, detailed the purpose of establishing this center in a speech at the Medical Council Association, and thus after its establishment, in addition to implementing the research project, establishing the infertility and laboratory embryo (IVF) department, he also taught at Tehran University and even obtained the necessary equipment and beyond that, obtained religious rulings from scholars to legitimize this treatment method. However, after a while, the mentioned project was stopped, and Dr. Saremi refrained from continuing the project at the university.

Until an opportunity arose at Aban Hospital, and in collaboration with the late Dr. Hassan Mohajeri, he established the IVF department at this hospital, and thus in 1989, for the first time in Iran, they delivered the first baby through the GIFT method, and the report of this success was presented at the congress that same year in Tehran. Following these activities, on Saturday, December 28, 1991, the first laboratory twins were born through the IVF method by Dr. Saremi and Dr. Mohajeri. After some time of research, educational, and treatment activities, Dr. Saremi established his private fertility and infertility center on August 21, 1993, on South Kheradmand Street in Tehran, and from then on became the source of new innovations in the science and practice of infertility, in addition to GIFT, IUI, and IVF, such as microinjection, ZIFT, hatching, using embryo glue, husband sperm freezing, embryo freezing, and successful fertility using spermatid (primary sperm cell); also regarding immunological recurrent miscarriages using lymphocyte therapy or in fetal death due to Rh sensitivity with intrauterine blood transfusion (IUT), examining fetal health and prenatal diagnosis of genetic disorders and thalassemia through CVS and amniocentesis, they established the relevant super-specialized clinics. He collaborated in establishing IVF infertility centers in Shiraz, Tabriz, Urmia, Isfahan, and Islamic Azad University (Tehran Medical Unit) and was the proposer of establishing at least fifty infertility centers in the country.
